als alex christensen im oktober 2017 sein ambitioniertes projekt »classical 90s dance« veröffentlichte, war ihm die neugierde von kollegen, fans und medien gewiss. als wichtigster deutscher impulsgeber der techno-, dance- und eurodance-bewegung, erarbeitete er sich zunächst als dj und komponist, schnell aber auch als producer weltruhm. plötzlich sollte der mann, der seit anfang der 90er-jahre vorzugsweise im hintergrund die musikalischen strippen für über 40 millionen verkaufter tonträger zog, erklären, was es mit »classical 90s dance« auf sich hatte. »classical 90s dance 2« ist nun die konsequente fortsetzung und der vorläufige höhepunkt seiner bald vier jahrzehnte andauernden musikreise.

ltd repress! by now, chicago s home of the ghetto house movement, dance mania, should need no introduction! if you didn t already know, they are the original purveyors of that hard-ass, stripped back, tough, hitting electronic funk, they ve never held back with their output. operating since the late 80 s the label has gained legions of fans over 2 decades as well as a certain notoriety and one of their most well-known artists has got to be the legendary dj deeon and his various production pseudonyms! this, the second in a series of samplers focusses on some of his unreleased cuts, rarities and classics from the dm catalogue. kicking things off with the demented over-sexed jacking off of da dik suk this ep shows you what s up from the jump. lifted off 1996 s freak like me ep this is vintage deeon to the core! this is followed up with the minimal, acidic runnings of 1112 , from deeon s 1996 chop shop release, a wigged out, simplistic groove that just won t stop. classic chicago weirdness that simply just slams. the frenetic phenomenon opens up side b, produced under his mute pseudonym and originally released in 1997 this is a sure-fire rarity from the dm vaults. a tough one to track down and a real essential under the radar cut. also featured is the wild acid of playground productionz the box , here in unreleased (!) rare remixed form by another chi-town legend - paul johnson. top shelf business. last but certainly not least is another playground jammer in the form of the killer vertigo lifted off the same ep from 1994 which is surely enough to whet even the toughest of appetites. file under jackin . every track on here has been remastered and repressed with the full consent and involvement of dj deeon and parris mitchell, selected and programmed from deeon s private archives and dat tapes for above board, london. 100% hater free.

following an impressive, low-key cassette release on kitty play in 2016, amsterdam-based artist aan zee makes the leap to vinyl with this appearance on pleasure wave, a label which has already made some waves with releases from g-marie, jonny 5 and miskotom. the aan zee sound is a lot to digest, spanning all kinds of cosmic funk, sky-scraping electronics and outernational influences, often all fired off at the same time. just sink your teeth into -persona/funny berber- for a taste and you ll understand. -vacation- is equally adventurous, with all kinds of melodic layering and instrument flexing in pursuit of an exotic new brew that doesn t shirk on the groove.

anders trentemollers career is a travel-heavy one, with his touring schedule taking him pretty much all over the world. but its his home port thats inspired his latest project, the sprawling, stunning compilation mix harbour boat trips vol. 02: copenhagen. clocking in at just over an hour long, the compilation sees trentemoller curate and craft sixteen songs into a heavy, hazy mix that ranges from shoegaze to electronica, featuring both familiar and celebrated artists like a place to bury strangers (with a new trentemoller remix) and slowdive to more obscure finds, as well as trentemollers own tracks and remixes, most notably a brand new trentemoller cover of neil youngs classic transformer man.the mix sees him pick up a thread he left off earlier in his career. in 2009 he put together harbour boat trips 01: copenhagen, a compilation mix comprised of his favourite music, both danish and international, from across four decades, loosely inspired by the motion and movement of copenhagens busy harbour. closing in on a decade later, were getting the second edition, with harbour boat trips - 02 arriving this november.

coming next from adult only: the repress of one of the most sought-after 12s from the label back catalogue. ao19: “formula express – main course” was originally released in 2002 and featured guillaume la tortue, jef k and chris carrier.
this is actually some of the last records ever produced by the mysterious guillaume la tortue, one of the pioneer of electronic music in france, who’s quoted by laurent garnier in his infamous “electrochoc” book as one of his main influence back in the days.

the record opens on the “main course”: a classic tech-house number with a beautiful 909 beat and a tasteful use of various samples and fx all through the track. the funky vocals still sound fresh today but the secret here (as often with chris carrier’s related work) is the groove – the kind of groove that reminds you summer days in the park while the strong bass-line announces already the next track.
on the flip, “starter” stands out as the perfect dancefloor killer with an infernal groove and a real fat analog bass-line that will keep you moving whether you want it or not. add just a few crispy tribal percussions on a classic raw 909 beat and you got the simplest and dubbiest song of the record but also the most efficient dancefloorwise.
the last cut, “apple pie”, might be the deepest of them all. spacy melodies and trippy vocals in the background make you first feel like you’re chillin on some extraterrestrial beach far away from earth. it starts as a nice breakbeat building the atmosphere before slowly evolving into a more 4-4esque tech-house with the bass coming in only after a couple of minutes. even if the sound was resolutely analogic, the whole ep is extremely well produced with a special care for details. at many levels this three-track ep is a landmark in the label history.

opia002 coming in thick and fast. four tracks. two artists. leading the way is steve marie, coming through with a refined combination of euphoria with a definite rave tinge. opiace is a pacey number from the off, with a bassline that creeps in and just keeps on coming back to get you. a dark and mysterious affair in yvar , driven and punchy, laced with peculiar voices.

after releasing abe security systems on the previous release, luis malon returns, this time with two tracks which take up the whole of the b side. a constant progression of obscurity and curious sounds from the south american artist in maybe forever baby . rounding off the ep is astrosonik , broken drums lead you to a place of otherworldly atmospheres, absorbing you in the trip. acquired grooves intelligently arranged by the young talent.

acid steve’s avinit label delivers 4 more warm and throbbing london squat party acid techno anthems from the heart of the london acid techno underground. featuring some of the major players of the scene - geezer/secret hero etc. - and newer producers like acid steve himself, benji 303, and rats on acid, this release is already being championed by the likes of chris and aaron liberator.

yugen’s third entry, laurine, arrives courtesy of los angeles-based producer and these things take time label-head b. hayes. at just 22 years old, hayes has packed remarkable perspective into this immersive deep-house four-tracker. it’s the work of a true participant. as if hayes work as a dj, producer, and label owner wasn’t enough, he has also put in time as a diy party promoter (he threw the beloved like i, love u parties that used to go down in the chinatown area of chicago) and a production assistant at chicago dance institution smart bar. the sum of all these parts is hayes impeccable ability to balance functionality with sonic taste.

long time canadian dj & producer murat remains a cult legend amongst technos elite. the revered recording artist who has released some of the most sought after records on labels like method 11:11 in the 90s now returns to fellow canadian jonny whites social experiment label with 3 cuts that show just why he’s remained such an enigmatic figure amongst the industry nearly 20 years later.

the accidental jnr label has just passed it s second birthday mark... so at 2 years and 15 releases in it only seems appropriate for the next 12- release to come from the artist that kicked the label off and has made it his home for the past 2 years... bambooman, with a remix from label boss matthew herbert himself on the b-side. the track can really speak for itself as this one is something special for the dancefloor, the only difficulty is choosing which version to play... dj support: gilles peterson, andrew thompson (huntley s & palmers), laurent garnier, simeon mobile disco, eclair fifi, bake, luke solomon, eliphino, severino panzetta, red axes, andrew weatherall, dixon...

the elusive producer nortasun hasn’t released a record since his debut one through saft back in 2016. after two years, it’s time for a follow up which is fittingly named “two”. the track titles also resume in a fashionable manner with the opening track being titled: “untitled 3”. on this track, nortasun introduces a firm rhythm that is supported by the impossibly beautiful strings that serve as the tracks key element and appear throughout. next up is the antonzap remix. antonzap doesn’t do the stereotypical remix take on the original. his version is dub laden, otherworldly, and only implements miniscule pieces from the original take. with just under 7 minutes, the remix version is a true sonic voyage.
on the b-side, nortasun takes a more dubbed out approach to modern day house music. “untitled 4” is a work of precision. the carefully crafted hats and dub elements sizzle throughout the entire track and help the track morph into a stunning piece of dance floor music around the four minute mark. nortasun cleverly introduces a thumping bass that changes up the mood for the entire work.

autarkic describe himself as first and foremost a songwriter but he has also made a name for himself as an international dj. over the past three years the musician based in tel aviv has, with great success, played clubs throughout all of europe. one extra memorable gig was on last year’s edition of convenanza in the amphitheatre in sete, france. rumour has it that the sea living mammals of the area flocked in large groups in the waters below during autarkic’s gig. this 12” picture vinyl is his first release on hoga nord rekords and the slightly psychedelic, sample- and synthesiser based club music that has become autarkic’s trademark sound is captured by an impeccable production. the music is playful, yet stripped down to the essentials and not overloaded. the vocal elements works more as percussive elements than the carrier of the storytelling in the music. if you missed him live or just don’t have the means to go see him, this record give a taste of autarkic’s hypnotic live performances!
